Russian in IPA

A worked example to show what the output looks like.

спасибо/spɐˈsʲibə/thank you

Why guess Russian pronunciation?

Russian spelling does not mark stress, yet stress controls how vowels are reduced and even which word you mean. Consonants also come in hard and soft (palatalised) pairs, a distinction the Cyrillic letters only partly show.

Stress is unmarked in writing but unpredictable, and it can change a word’s meaning.
Unstressed vowels reduce — the most prominent being akanye, where unstressed o moves toward an a-like sound.
Most consonants have hard and soft (palatalised) versions that contrast.
Final consonants devoice, as in German.
