Download IPAtics
The desktop app for Windows and macOS. It is free, with 10 transcriptions a day on a free account. Windows 10 or later, or macOS 12 Monterey or later.
What the installer adds
Windows: IPAtics-Setup.exe installs the IPAtics app, for your user account unless you choose everyone on this computer, in a folder you can change. It adds a Start menu entry and a desktop shortcut, and registers ipaapp:// links so that signing in through your browser can return you to the app. The installer is not code-signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen may warn before it runs.
macOS: IPAtics.dmg holds the app, signed and notarized by Apple. You drag it into Applications.
Nothing else is installed: no other programs, no browser extensions or toolbars, and no ads.
What IPAtics does while it runs
- It keeps an icon in the Windows system tray or the macOS menu bar, and listens for its hotkey, Alt+Q (Option+Q on a Mac), in every app. When you press it, it copies the text you have selected and shows its IPA. You can change the hotkey in Settings.
- On Windows, it also notices when you select text with the mouse and shows a small button beside it. It reads that selection on your computer so the button can answer at once, and sends nothing until you click the button or press the hotkey. Settings → Selection button turns this off.
- Words are looked up in dictionaries that come with the app. Text they cannot answer, and the audio it plays, come from the IPAtics server. Your text, screenshots and recordings leave your computer only when you ask IPAtics to transcribe, play or analyse them. The Privacy Policy lists what is sent and how long it is kept.
- It checks dl.ipatics.com for new versions, downloads them in the background and installs them when you quit.
- It does not start with your computer unless you turn on Launch at startup in Settings, or accept when it offers to.
How to uninstall
Windows
- Right-click the IPAtics icon in the system tray and choose Quit.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps (on Windows 10, Apps & features), find IPAtics and choose Uninstall.
- The uninstaller asks whether to delete your IPAtics data too: your settings, saved words, history and the speech-analyzer model in %APPDATA%\IPAtics. Choose No to keep them for a reinstall.
macOS
- Click the IPAtics icon in the menu bar and choose Quit.
- Drag IPAtics from Applications to the Trash.
- To remove its data too, delete ~/Library/Application Support/IPAtics, and remove IPAtics from System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility (and Screen Recording or Microphone, if you allowed them).
If you moved your data under Settings → Privacy → Data location, it is in the folder you chose instead, and neither the uninstaller nor the steps above remove it. Delete that folder yourself.
Uninstalling does not delete your account. To delete it, sign in to your account on this website and choose Delete account.
