Tools/IPA Anki decks

Free IPA Anki decks with audio

Three ready-made Anki decks, built from the IPAtics phoneme pages: 48 English sounds in US and UK English IPA, 95 English minimal pairs, and 19 sounds from German, French, Spanish, Russian and Arabic. Every word comes with its audio. Free, no account.

The decks

English sounds

48 English sounds, each with the example words from its phoneme page in US and UK English IPA.

Two cards per sound: the symbol, to say the sound and check it against a word; and a word with the sound blanked out of its transcription, to name the symbol.

48 sounds · 477 words · 902 audio clips

English minimal pairs

95 pairs of English words that differ in one sound, like think and sink.

Two cards per pair: each plays one of the two words and asks which you heard, then shows both in IPA.

95 pairs · 190 cards · 185 audio clips

Sounds beyond English

19 sounds from German, French, Spanish, Russian and Arabic that English lacks or uses differently.

The same two cards as the English sounds deck, with example words in their own language.

19 sounds · 187 words · 186 audio clips

IPA from the IPAtics lexicons; audio made with Google text-to-speech voices. Each deck shows up under IPAtics in your deck list.

How to import a deck

Anki on a computer

Double-click the downloaded file, or in Anki choose File → Import… and pick it. The deck appears under IPAtics in your deck list.

AnkiDroid

Download the file on your phone and open it with AnkiDroid, or in AnkiDroid open the menu on the deck list, choose Import and pick the file.

AnkiMobile (iPhone, iPad)

Download the file in Safari, open it from Downloads or the Files app, tap Share and choose AnkiMobile.

Updating a deck

When a new version is out, import it the same way: Anki updates the notes you already have and keeps your review history. An update can replace your own edits to those notes, and Anki skips it if you added, renamed or removed a field in an IPAtics note type.

Print the IPA chart too

Every symbol on the interactive IPA chart on two printable pages: A4 PDF (246 KB) or US Letter PDF (249 KB).
