Why guess Spanish pronunciation?

Spanish spelling is famously close to its pronunciation, but a few details still trip learners: regional differences in the c/z sound, the b/v merger, and the contrast between the tapped and trilled r all affect the transcription.

Castilian distinguishes the c/z sound from s (distinción); most of Latin America merges them (seseo).
The letters b and v are pronounced the same in Spanish.
Spanish contrasts a single tapped r with a trilled rr — a true minimal-pair difference.
Vowels are short, pure, and consistent, which makes Spanish IPA refreshingly stable.
