Why guess Italian pronunciation?

Italian is largely phonetic, yet the spelling does not always show open vs close e and o, where the stress falls, or that a doubled consonant is genuinely held longer — all of which IPA makes explicit.

Open and close e and o are distinct vowels, but the spelling does not mark them.
Double (geminate) consonants are pronounced longer and can change meaning.
The digraphs gli and gn stand for single palatal sounds, not letter-by-letter readings.
Stress is usually on the second-to-last syllable but has many exceptions the IPA marks clearly.
