Why guess German pronunciation?

German spelling is more regular than English, but several traps remain: the ch sound has two distinct realisations, final consonants devoice, vowel length is contrastive, and the umlauts ä, ö, ü each carry sounds that English does not.

The letter "ch" splits into the front ich-Laut and the back ach-Laut depending on the preceding vowel.
Final obstruents devoice: a written -d or -g at the end of a word is pronounced like -t or -k.
Vowel length is phonemic — long and short vowels distinguish otherwise identical words.
The umlauts ä, ö, ü add front-rounded and fronted vowels absent from English.
