French in IPA

A worked example to show what the output looks like.

bonjour/bɔ̃.ʒuʁ/hello

Why guess French pronunciation?

French writes far more letters than it pronounces. Final consonants are often silent, vowels nasalise, words link together in connected speech (liaison), and the r is a single uvular sound nothing like the English r — none of which the spelling reveals on its own.

Many final consonants are silent, so the written and spoken word lengths rarely match.
French has nasal vowels with no direct English equivalent.
Liaison links a normally-silent final consonant to the next word that starts with a vowel.
The French r is a single uvular sound, produced at the back of the mouth.
